Dear Councilman Chung:
Re: Bill No. 93 Relating to the Minimum Tax
As an owner of two lots in Kalapana Gardens subdivision in Puna, I would like to draw
attention to the impact of the provisions of Bill No. 93 on owners of land in the areas
devastated by lava flows from the ongoing eruption of Kilauea volcano.
While I support the general objective of Bill No. 93, I believe that raising the minirrium
property tax from the current $25 to $100 for properties inundated by lava would result in
a substantial 11®ss of badly needed revenues for the County. The great majority of such
property owners will, in all likelihood, cease to pay any property taxes whatsoever,
preferring to abandon these properties rather than pay $100 pea year when there is a
complete absence of normal County services.
I hope that the Finance Committee will amend Bill No. 93 to retain the current $25 tax
for properties that have been impacted by lava flows.
