ORDINANCE NO. 93 98
AN ORDINANCE NAMING THE KONA GYM LOCATED AT KAILUA-KONA.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Findings and Purpose. The purpose of this
ordinance is to name the new gym located at Kailua-Kona, pursuant
to Article 8 of Chapter 15 of the Hawaii County Code of 1983,
which establishes guidelines for the naming of county parks and
recreational facilities.
SECTION 2. Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary,
the new gym at Kailua-Kona is hereby named Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
SECTION 3. Pursuant to Section 15-67(b)(5), the following
information is provided:
When Kamehameha I died he left formal authority over the
kingdom divided between his son, Liholiho, who was to rule, and
his nephew, Kekuaokalani, who was designated as guardian of the
war god, Kukailimoku. When Liholiho ate with the female chiefs
and broke the kapu system, Kekuaokalani resisted the overthrow of
the old ways. During the battle at Kuamo'o, Kekuaokalani led the
forces who fought to preserve the old ways and upkeep the kapu
system. He was courageous throughout the battle. Although he
suffered a wound in the leg, he continued fighting until he was
surrounded and shot in the chest. He died facing his enemies.
His wife, Manono, fought by his side and died in battle with him.
He is remembered today for his loyalty to traditional Hawaiian
ways and for the love and support given to him by the
maka'ainana. In this the year of the 100th anniversary of the
Hawaiian kingdom's overthrow, it is appropriate to honor
Kekuaokalani who remained true to his heritage and fought to
uphold the trust that Kamehameha had bestowed upon him.
SECTION 4. In the event that any portion of this ordinance
is declared invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the other
parts of this ordinance.
SECTION 5. This ordinance shall take effect upon its
approval.
