Subject: 2 percent Land Fund
Hello.
I am writing to express my dismay at Mayor Kenoi's plan to 'raid' the 2 percent Land
Fund. This is in direct opposition to what his constituents want - the accumulation of
funds to purchase of open space land for future generations of Hawaii Island residents. I
would suggest that there are other, better ways of balancing the budget.
For example, recent disclosures of county employees getting overtime pay while goofing
off during regular work hours browsing the internet indicate there is a need to monitor
county workers to assure we, the taxpayers, are getting our money's worth from them. It
is a known fact that Hawaii has more government employees for the size of the
population than almost any other state. Government salaries make up the largest part of
the budget.
I am no expert on the county budget but I, do believe that the small amount of money that
is involved in the land fund is not going to solve the county budget crisis. You need to
look for other places to cut (maybe stop doing all these expensive 'studies' that are
rampant any time anything is being considered here). The Commentary by Debbie Hecht
that appeared in West Hawaii Today (4/15/2009) makes some excellent suggestions for
much more lucrative places to get additional funds to cover the budget shortfall. Do not
use the Land Fund!
