Chair Yoshimoto
I help our local businesses and charitable organizations, as a tax payer and voter. And I
am writing to ask that you support Bill No. 49, Relating to Public Access, Open Space,
and Natural Resources Preservation Fund. I am Unit 13 Chair for the Island of Hawaii
with the HGEA. I represent 1,052 government workers on this island both in the
County and the State. I live in Hilo, Hawaii County.
By suspending the transfer of 2% of real property tax revenue to the Open Space fund,
Mayor Kenoi's budget is balanced, and ensures the continuation of vital county
programs and services. During times of economic crisis, it is important to keep people
employed, because workers, like me, contribute to the economic health of our
communities by supporting local businesses and charitable organizations.
It is my understanding that the Mayor's recent revised budget leaves 55 positions
unfunded, which will make it even more difficult for our county to deliver needed
government services. Please preserve jobs and avoid furloughs to give our
communities a fighting chance to recover from the economic challenges we all now
face.
The action called for in Bill 49 will provide a temporary, but necessary, relief. I
strongly support Mayor Kenoi in his request to suspend the transfer of 2% of the real
property tax revenue to the Open Space Fund and I strongly urge you to support Bill
No. 49, too.
Sincerely,
Jo Ann E. Loa
