While District 5 representative Emily Naeole has helped to get more local people involved in the political process and is beloved by many, I do not support replacing county council vice-chair, District 9 representative Pete Hoffmann. Council member Hoffmann was chair of the last County Council and is a retired Army colonel. He is a trained and experience leader with proven skills who has the ability to compromise and negotiate agreement in complicated situations and circumstances. But most importantly, beginning with former District 8 representative Curtis Tyler III in 2000, leeward Hawai'i has had a representative as either chair or vice-chair of the County Council. This has been a fair political reflection of leeward HawaiTs population and tax-base relative to the entire island. However, if this resolution passes and Council member Naeole becomes vice-chair, 70,000 leeward residents will no longer have representation in one of the County Council's two leadership positions. This goes against the democratic values and is contrary to the basic constitutional right to equal representation. It also goes against Hawaiian values of lokahi, balance and harmony. For these reasons, I am asking you to vote against Resolution 200-09. The current structure of the County Council is better than what is being proposed..
