Second, I am OPPOSED to Resolution 200-09. We hope our County can work together, eastside and westside, and perhaps avoid a split into East Hawaii and West Hawaii. To help make this so, it is important to have eastside and westside representation in one of the County Council's two leadership positions. Saying "I represent all Hawaii" may be true in hearts and intentions, but (a) perceptions are reality and (b) the historical voting records across many years show a tendency for Council members to represent their districts. I write this with great respect for District 5 representative Emily Naeole and would be happy indeed to see her in one of the two top leadership positions. This issue, for me, is having one of the two top positions filled by a West Hawaii member. I have greatest respect for Council member Pete Hoffmann of District 9 and would like to see him continue to serve in a top leadership position. Thus I am asking you to vote against Resolution 200-09. Thank you for your consideration.
