COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION N0. 34 95
WHEREAS, The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is a
wholly independent organization solely responsible for the accreditation of the University
of Hawaii and all of its campuses; and
WHEREAS, in May 1994, WASC evaluated the University of Hawaii at Hilo
(UHH); and
WHEREAS, UHH sets the budget and is responsible for the administration of
UHH-West Hawaii Education Center in Kona; and
WHEREAS, three members of the WASC Accreditation Team went to Kona to
evaluate the UHH-West Hawaii Education Center: and
WHEREAS, the WASC Accreditation Committee spent one full day on the West
Hawaii campus, met with staff, faculty and students; and
WHEREAS, WASC wrote a 108-page report on the UHH of which 12 pages were
specifically devoted to the UHH-West Hawaii Education Center; and
WHEREAS, the WASC report described conditions and made recommendations
specifically concerning the UHH-West Hawaii Education Center; and
WHEREAS, the conditions described and recommendations made are matters of
serious concern to the Hawaii County Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF
THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests that the Higher Education Committee of
both the State House of Representatives and the State Senate hold heazings to examine
the WASC accreditation report and its recommendations with regard to the UHH-West
Hawaii Education Center.
BE IT FURTI-IER RESOLVED that both committees aze requested to determine
whether the UHH-West Hawaii Education Center should be allocated additional
resources to carry out these recommendations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor of the State of Hawaii, all the members
of the Higher Education Committees of both the State House of Representatives and the
State Senate, and all of the Hawaii Island Legislators.
