RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE REGISTRY OF ARTIFACTS.
WHEREAS, the registry of artifacts, be they indigenous or nonindigenous, provides a
way to protect Hawaii's cultural and historical heritage; and
WHEREAS, the registry of Hawaiian artifacts would serve as a repository of data and
information to educate Hawaii's citizenry of the state's unique and diverse cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, a general announcement in the media calling for a voluntary submittal of
information of artifacts held in private collections would provide a means to incorporate
privately owned artifacts in the general body of knowledge regazding Hawaii s cultural heritage;
and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii could administer such a registry with the assistance
of the office of Hawaiian affairs, the department of land and natural resources, and the Bishop
Museum; and
WHEREAS, it would be unlawful to submit information to the University of Hawaii that
misrepresents the authenticity of an artifact; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 408 would amend Chapter 304, Hawaii Revised Statutes,
adding a new section to create a Hawaii artifacts registry to be administered by the University of
Hawaii;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports the intent of Senate Bill No. 408 and urges its passage.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of
this Resolution to Senator Norman Mizuguchi, President of the Senate; Senator David Ige,
Chairman of the Higher Education, Culture & Arts Committee; Senator Andrew Levin; and
Kenneth P. Mortimer, President of the University of Hawaii.
