RESOLUTION N0. ~6 95
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HOUSE HILL 2180, PROVIDING FUNDING FOR A
GYMNASIUM IN KEAUKAHA.
WHEREAS, the present building being used as a gymnasium in
Keaukaha (Kawananakoa Hall) was not intended to serve as a
gymnasium, but rather a community hall, and thus was not
appropriately designed as a gymnasium; and
WHEREAS, this hall, built in 1946, is used by approximately
124,000 people annually for various community and sports events; and
WHEREAS, Kawananakoa Hall, in its capacity as a gymnasium and
serving the volume of people that it does, is woefully inadequate in
several areas including: the absence of a paved driveway and parking
area, a lack of handicapped facilities, inadequate restrooms,
especially for the many elementary school children who use the
facility, a concession area that is actually an exposed outdoor
pavilion attached to the gym and which has no restroom facilities,
and an open kitchen which should be enclosed for health reasons; and
WHEREAS, there is presently a bill before the State Legislature
which would provide funds out of the Department of Accounting and
General Services to construct a new gymnasium in Keaukaha.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED HY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that it supports the passage of HB 2180, relating to capital
improvement projects for the benefit of the third representative
district, specifically item E which would provide $2,393,120 for the
planning, design and construction of a new gymnasium, demolition of
the eaisting structure and ground and site improvements.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable Benjamin J.
Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Honorable Stephen K.
Yamashiro, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, Representative Eric
Hamakawa, and Representative Calvin Say, Chairman of the House
Finance Committee.
