A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING SENATE SILL 1871, MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO
SUPPORT AND PROMOTE TOURISM SPORTING EVENTS INCLUDING NATIONALLY AND
INTERNATIONALLY TELEVISED GOLF TOURNAMENTS IN HAWAII.
WHEREAS, the State Legislature finds that tourism is by far the
State's primary industry in terms of the generation of dollars and
jobs and therefore must be vigorously pursued to help ensure the
economic viability of the State; and
WHEREAS, the legislature finds that the expenditure of public
funds to promote the nationally and internationally televised golf
events in Hawaii which are leveraged by substantial amounts of
private dollars is a wise and cost-effective use of public funds; and
WHEREAS, the Senior Skins Game at Mauna Lani alone was seen by
eight million American households in January and is the third most
watched golf event in America and the state's highest rated
televised golf event, creating an opportunity to highlight the
beauty of Hawaii and bringing credit to the desirability of Hawaii
as a visitor destination and golfing resort paradise.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that it supports the passage of SB 1871, and urges the State
legislature to continue funding $800,000 for neighbor island
televised golf events.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable Benjamin J.
Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Honorable Stephen K.
Yamashiro, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, the Honorable Norman
Mizuguchi, President of the Senate, the Honorable Joseph M. Souki,
Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honorable Donna Ikeda
and the Honorable Rosalyn Baker, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of
the Senate Ways and Means Committee, the Honorable Calvin Say and
the Honorable Hertha Kawakami, Chairperson and vice-Chairperson of
the House Finance Committee, the Honorable Joe Tanaka and the
Honorable Malama Solomon, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the
Senate Tourism & Recreation Committee, the Honorable Romy M. Cachola
and the Honorable Jerry Chang, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of
the House Tourism Committee, the Honorable Virginia Isbell,
Representative, and Mr. Thos Rohr, President of the Kohala Coast
Resort Association.
