HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 108 Draft 01 1994-1996COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF hAWAII RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the 1995 State Legislature effectively raised taxes by extending the already indefensible "bed tax" on Hawaii's elderly living in nursing homes, while at the same time repealing the off-setting medical excise tax credit; and WHEREAS, for many of our elderly, nursing homes provide the only shelter and source oflife-sustaining care; and WHEREAS, the Legislature also raised taxes by reducing and eliminating tax credits which provide assistance to families by offsetting onerous excise taxes on food and medical care; and WHEREAS, this action severely affects the people who can least afford it: low income persons and families. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that it requests Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano to veto House Bill 1643, HD ], SD 1, CD 1, the nursing facility tax bill and House Bill 1472, HD I, SD 1, CD 1, the food and medical services excise tax bill. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Benjamin J. Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Honorable Norman Mizuguchi, President of the State Senate and the Honorable Joseph Souki, Speaker of the State House of Representatives.
