RESOLUTION N0. 1~ 86
WHEREAS, the citizens of the County of Hawaii recognize and take pride
in the valor and sacrifices of the nation's veterans, especially those who have been
wounded in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, Service-Connected Disability compensation for veterans of
World War I, World War II, the Korean Waz, the Vietnam War and the Persian
Gulf War and any succeeding conflicts, as designated by the President of the
United States, is compensation provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs
for wounds and/or injuries sustained while on active duty; and
WHEREAS, Social Security disability compensation is compensation
provided by the Social Security Administration for veterans injured while in the
service of their country; and
WHEREAS, the elimination, reduction or taxation of Service-Connected
Disability compensation or Social Security Disability compensation would in
effect penalize the service-connected disabled and their families and would
represent a grave injustice to those individuals who have made the supreme
sacrifice for our nation; and
WHEREAS, it is the Council's position that although the current federal
budget deficit requires cost savings measures, elimination, reducing or taxing
disability compensation benefits does not constibate an equitable means of
achieving such savings.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII, that it urge Hawaii's Congressional Delegation to
support legislation that protects Service-Connected Disability and Social Security
Disability compensation for veterans from elimination, reduction or taxation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a copy of this resolution to each member of Hawaii's Congressional
Delegation, the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the
Commissioner of the Social Security Administration.
