RESOLUTION URGING THAT THE VOLCANO HEALING ART CENTRE BE
DESIGNATED A FEDERAL RURAL HEALTH CENTER
WHEREAS, the Volcano Medical Healing Art Centre, which is run by Dr. Laura Moire,
provides medical services in the Puna Mauka area defined as the Volcano's National Park,
Kilauea Military Camp and the surrounding residential communities; and
WHEREAS, the Volcano Healing Art Centre is trying to qualify as a Federal Rural
Health Center; and
WHEREAS, this federal designation would provide much needed enhanced medical care
for the residents of Puna Mauka;. and
WHEREAS, Dr. Moire would like to locate this facility in the Kilauea Military Camp,
near the highway access road, as this location would provide the most accessible site for the
surrounding community; and
WHEREAS, Dan Domizio of the Primary Care Round Table has undertaken the task of
providing advisory direction to the Volcano Healing Art Centre in its attempt to qualify for the
federal designation; and
WHEREAS, the Volcano Healing Art Centre has committed itself to provide and recover
culturally endangered medicinal therapies, as demonstrated through its effort with the
Americorps Organization to create an Ethno Botanical medicinal garden at the Healing Centre;
and
WHEREAS, residents of the area have signaled their desire for this project by signing
petitions requesting support for their cause.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII, that it supports the acceptance of the Volcano Healing Art Centre as a Federal Rural
Health Center and its location at the Kilauea Ntilitary Camp; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of
this Resolution to Dr. Laura Moire of the Volcano Healing Art Centre, General James Hosting,
Commander of the Tripler Army Medical Center, Mr. Dan Domizio, President of the Primary
Care Round Table, Mr. Randy Hart, Director of the Kilauea Military Camp, Mr. Jim Martin,
Director of the Volcano's National Park, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka,
Representative Neil Abercrombie, and Representative Patsy T. Mink.
