RESOLUTION N0. ~~ ~
RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING UNIVERSAL PICTURES ON THE SUCCESS OF
"WATERWORLD" AND CONVEYING OUR APPRECIATION FOR THE SELECTION OF
THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII AS THE PRODUCTION SITE.
WHEREAS, the Big Island of Hawaii will be capitalizing on Waipio Valley's panoramic
spleridor with the world-wide showing of the movie "Waterworld"; and
WHEREAS, production of the movie at Kawaihae Harbor and Waipio Valley has
boosted the Big Island's economy by approximately $35 million over a fourteen month period
inclusive of prepazation, filming and clean up; and
WHEREAS, nearly 400 resident actors and extras and countless other technicians found
temporary employment with King Kona Productions; and
WHEREAS, the publicity, which will be endowed upon the Big Island by the world-wide
showing of "Waterworld," will enhance our tourist industry and encourage future film
productions; and
WHEREAS, the Big Island community will forever revere the fond memories of their
experiences with the filming of "Waterworld".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates and extends sincerest best wishes on the success of "Waterworld"
to Universal Pictures, King Kona Productions, and its cast and crew members.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it extends warmest and heartfelt appreciation for the
selection of the Big Island as the production site.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of
this Resolution to Donna Smith, Senior Vice President of Universal Pictures Productions;
Chuck Gordon, Producer of "Waterworld;" Dave Fulton, "Waterworld" Publicist; the
Honorable Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro and Diane Quitiquit, Director of the Department of
Research and Development.
