A RESOLUTION RELATING TO NUCLEAR FREE WEEK
WHEREAS, the French testing of nucleaz devices on the Mururoa Atoll has caused
tremendous international outcry; and
WHEREAS, the Hawai' i Coalition Against Nucleaz Testing (HCANT), a broad-based
group of organizations, churches and individuals, has joined together to oppose the French
nuclear tests in Tahiti; and
WHEREAS, Hawai' i Coalition Against Nuclear Testing has proposed that the week of
October 23 to October 29 be designated "Nucleaz Free Week" and Governor Benjamin Cayetano
has duly proclaimed this week as "Nuclear Free Week"; and
WHEREAS, this week in October corresponds with the United Nations' Global Week for
Disarmament and also the celebration of the United Nations' fiftieth yeaz anniversazy; and
WHEREAS, a "Nuclear Free" Art Contest will serve to educate young people about the
implications of nucleaz testing and make them awaze of the threat that the world's collective
nuclear arsenal poses for humanity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAI' I that it commends the Hawai' i Coalition Against Nucleaz Testing and the Honorable
Governor Benjamin Cayetano for working together to proclaim the week of October 23 to
October 29 as "Nuclear Free Week" and that it is proud to observe this week as an effort to
promote global peace and nuclear restraint and responsibility and to end nuclear testing in the
Pacific.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawai' i transmit copies
of this Resolution to the Honorable Benjamin Cayetano, the Governor of the State of Hawai' i,
and the Hawai i Coalition Against Nuclear Testing.
