RESOLUTION N0. 22U 95
RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF A BRONZE AND LAVA MONUMENT AT
PUNALU'U BEACH PARK.
WHEREAS, Hawaii has a unique marine environment, with many
endangered species; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Legislature declared 1995 as the "Year
of the Sea Turtle"; and
WHEREAS, it is important for the County of Hawaii, to acknowledge
efforts to protect these endangered species from depletion and
extinction; and
WHEREAS, for the past several years the Honu Project, in
conjunction with countless community volunteers, has spearheaded an
endeavor to recognize and protect the sea turtles at Punalu'u Beach
Park; and
WHEREAS, these efforts have included the construction of a bronze
and lava monument located at Punalu'u Beach Park; and
WHEREAS, this monument designed by Maui artist Dale Zarrella, will
be unveiled on November 25, 1995; and
WHEREAS, this monument will serve as a interpretive sign depicting
the Hawaiian legend of Kauila, the mystical sea turtle who would turn
into a young girl to play with and protect the children along
Punalu'u Bay; and
WHEREAS, this monument will also encourage visitors to appreciate
and respect, but not touch or harm the turtles that live there.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it applauds and recognizes this extraordinary dedication
towards the preservation of the sea turtle; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in accordance with article XIII,
section 13-12 of the Hawaii County Charter, the County of Hawaii
accepts the donation of this bronze and lava monument from the Honu
Project; and
BE IT FURTHER R1 .VED that the Clerk of 1 county of Hawaii is
instructed to transmit copies of this resolution to The Honorable
Mayor Stephen Yamashiro; Harry Takahasi, Director, Finance
Department; George Yoshida, Director, Parks and Recreation
Department; Laura Sasaki, Executive Director, The Honu Project; and
Geri Cuddihy, Ka'u High School.
