RESOLUTION N0. 23'y 95
A RESOLUTION RELATING TO FUNDING FOR THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR
THE ARTS AND THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES
WHEREAS, neazly every major, industrialized nation actively funds progams supporting
the arts and humanities; and
WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives is considering a measure relating
to the Department of the Interior and cultural programs, which would eliminate or reduce funding
for a range of programs; and
WHEREAS, if this measure is enacted, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and
the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) would each receive approximately $100
million dollazs in the fiscal year 1996, which represents a forty (40) percent reduction in funding
from last yeaz's appropriation; and
WHEREAS, the NEA and the NEH distribute federal grant money to states and
communities for cultural events, programs and projects; and
WHEREAS, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in Hawal' i distributes NEA
funds and grant money to perpetuate traditional and folk art, to stage theater and opera
performances throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and to help finance events like the Hawaz i
International Film Festival; and
WHEREAS, both Democrat and Republican members of Congress have hailed the NEA's
funding of arts programs in small towns and rural communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAI I that it supports national funding for the arts and humanities and respectfully requests
that the U. S. House of Representatives consider continued support for the NEA and NEH, which
promote America's rich cultural assets and foster creativity and diversity in our society.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawai i transmit copies
of this Resolution to Hawai' is Congressional Delegation; Senator Daniel K. Inouye,
Senator Daniel K. Akaka, Representative Patsy T. Mink, and Representative Neil Abercrombie.
