RESOLUTION N0. 250-96
(Draft 3)
WHEREAS, Young Brothers revised their shipping rate schedules effective October 9,
1995; and
WHEREAS, the only public heazing to heaz the concerns of the people about the revised
rate schedules was held on Oahu on August 2, 1995; and
WHEREAS, Young Brothers, Limited informed each County's Mayor and the State
Legislators of the revised rate schedules prior to October 9, 1995; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Hawaii are concerned that when the revision of
the rate schedules was considered, Young Brothers did not consider (1) the agricultural and
livestock industries which ship their goods and animals to other islands, (2) the motorcyclists
(bikers) who conduct an annual exodus to the Big Island during the Labor Day weekend, (3) the
greater business community, and (4) the outrigger canoe sailing and racing communities; and
WHEREAS, the one-way shipping rate for an individual bike has increased from
approximately $25.00 to $120.00 or higher depending on the weight of the bike, and the
shipping rates for canoes and trailered horses have increased by 50% and 40% respectively
versus a general rate increase of approximately 20% for all goods; and
WHEREAS, bikers and businesses are concerned about the increased rates. The bikers
from all neighboring islands, who conduct an annual Labor Day exodus to the Big Island, are
concerned that it may not be feasible to ship their bikes over for the weekend, and the merchants
of the County of Hawaii in their yearly anticipation of this event are concerned that they may
lose some of their anticipated revenue.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests Young Brothers, Limited to reconsider lowering its rates on the items
that are shipped individually or in containers to help the people of the state, especially in these
hard economic times.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a copy of this
resolution to Young Brothers, Limited; the Public Utilities Commission; the Honorable
Benjamin Cayetano, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Stephen K. Yamashiro,
