RESOLUTION N0. 261 96
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HAWAII PUBLIC RADIO'S APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL
FUNDS TO CONSTRUCT AN ISLAND OF HAWAII FM STATION
WHEREAS, Hawaii Public Radio (HPR) offers quality non-commercial radio
programming to residents of the City and County of Honolulu, the County of Maui and to the
North Kohala, South Kohala, North Kona, and South Kona districts and a portion of the
Hamakua district of the County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, HPR offers radio programs of particular interest to Hawaii residents such as
Na Mele O Hawaii, A Hawaiian Sunday with Keith Haugen, the Price of Paradise, A Second
Glance, Ke Aolama, Hawaiian Word of the Day, and News of Hawaii and the Pacific; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii Public Radio programming also features popular programs of
national interest such as Morning Edition, A Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered,
Performance Today, Adventures in Good Music, and Car Talk; and
WHEREAS, the Hilo district, portions of the Hamakua district, and the southeast districts
of the County of Hawaii are unable to enjoy HPR's quality programs because geographical
conditions obstruct adequate reception of HPR's broadcast signal; and
WHEREAS, HPR is seeking funds from the federal Public Telecommunications
Facilities Program to enable it to construct facilities to broadcast HPR programs to these
communities; and
WHEREAS, the Council believes that making it possible for the residents of these
unserved communities to receive HPR's programming would be of significant benefit to the
County of Hawaii.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it urges the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program of the United States
Department of Commerce to grant Hawaii Public Radio's application for funding.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a true
copy of this resolution to Hawaii Public Radio for inclusion in its application to the Public
Telecommunications Facilities Program.
