RESOLUTION N0. 303 96
A RESOLUTION RELATING TO "CARING FOR THE EARTH MONTH"
WHEREAS, the Earth-Friendly Schools program, created in 1992 on Kauai by the
Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, exists "to instill an environmental ethic into the
lives of our youth"; and
WHEREAS, the Earth-Friendly Schools program is being implemented statewide and
has recently expanded to become an international program; and
WHEREAS, the Earth-Friendly Schools program wishes to make April 1996, "Gazing for
the Earth Month," scheduling events and activities statewide to improve our state's environment
and promote partnerships between schools, governments, organizations, and businesses in order
to address the common concern of environmental quality; and
WHEREAS, the Earth-Friendly Schools program promotes the traditional Native
Hawaiian values of Malama Ka ~ Aina, Lokahi, and Ohana, as fundamental components in its
environmental ethic; and
WHEREAS, "Caring for the Earth Month" will further promote the sentiment of "Earth
Day, Every Day" and extend the celebration of Earth Day over the whole month of April; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor of Hawaii County has proclaimed April, "Caring for the Earth
Month," in order to promote the protection of Hawaii's unique ecosystems.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it joins Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro in recognizing April 1996 as "Caring for
the Earth Month" and it urges the citizens of the County of Hawaii to respect our environment,
promote an enhanced quality of life, and protect our natural resources.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii' i transmit
copies of this Resolution to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, to Earth-Friendly Schools
Hawaii i-International, and to the islandwide co-sponsors and participating organizations of
"Caring for the Earth Month ."
