HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 311 Draft 01 1994-1996COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 3l~ 96 A RESOLUTION RELATING TO EARTH DAY WHEREAS, the first Earth Day events of 1970, conceptualized by Senator Gaylord Nelson and organized by Dennis Hayes, aze given credit for helping to create the modern environmental movement and the eazliest environmental legislation; and WHEREAS, Apri121, 1996, will be the 26th observance of Earth Day, an event now recognized internationally; and WHEREAS, the mission of Earth Day is "to increase awareness, responsibility and action toward a clean, healthy future for all living things"; and WHEREAS, Earth Day serves as reminder of the increasing stresses that are being brought to bear on the global environment; and WHEREAS, the observance of Earth Day creates support for environmental programs, bringing together governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals to promote the common good of a healthy environment and a sustainable future; and WHEREAS, each year millions of individuals attend Earth Day Events with thousands of volunteers participating in the events and projects; and WHEREAS, the number of activities and events surrounding Earth Day have continued to increase so that the observance of Earth Day now extends throughout the months of Mazch, April, and May; and WHEREAS, numerous events and clean-ups have been scheduled on the island of Hawaii including the Earth Day Expo, Keep Hawaii Beautiful Day, Recycle Day, Malama Manuka Park, the Mazch for Parks, the Earth Day Fair, Keiki Surf for the Earth, the Independent Power Forum, and a Peace Garden Dedication. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it joins with the numerous organizations and individuals on the island of Hawaii in observing, celebrating, and promoting April 21, 1996 as Earth Day in order to foster ecological sensitivity and to promote community action targeted at improving our environment. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it urges the citizens of the island of Hawaii to participate in the activities and events scheduled on and around Earth Day and that it commends the vazious organizations and individuals that have made these events and activities possible. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this Resolution to Recycle Hawaii, Earth-Friendly Schools, Keep Hawaii Beautiful, Performing & Fine Artists for Peace, Global Hope, U.H. Sea Grant Program, Youth for Environmental Service, Hawaii Environmental Education Association, Protect Kohanaiki Ohana, Ka' u Outdoor Circle, Greenpeace Foundation, and Ka'u High School Shout Program.
