RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Pacific History Association and the Center for Pacific Island Studies aze
sponsoring a conference on the History, Culture and Power in the Pacific at the University of Hawaii at
Hilo between July 9 - 13, 1996; and
WHEREAS, this international conference will critically address three formidable concepts --
history, culture and power -- that have informed and continue to inform the study of Pacific pasts; and
WHEREAS, the keynote speakers far the conference will be Dr. Lilikala Kame'eleihiwa, an
associate professor in the Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Professor
Greg Dening, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Melbourne; and
WHEREAS, the registration fee for the conference is $110 (general) and $65 (student) with
housing and meal plan options chazged sepazately; and
WHEREAS, the Council finds that the furtherance of study of the history and culture of the Pacific
region is a public purpose, and that the promotion of this conference will serve that purpose.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that $3,000 be and is hereby transferred/appropriated out and from Clerk Council SVC OCE
Miscellaneous Contract Services Account No. 010-101-5101.02-115 and credited to Reseazch &
Development OCE Miscellaneous Contract Services Account No. 010-161-5161.02-115 and paid to the
Conference of History, Culture and Power in the Pacific to cover the registration, housing and meal plan
fees for worthwhile and deserving students or individuals interested in attending the conference provided
that they aze residents or students of the Big Island.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this
resolution to Ms. Diane Quitiquit, Director of Reseazch & Development, Dr. Kenneth Mortimer, President
of the University of Hawaii; Dr. Kenneth Perrin, Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo; Mr. David
Hanlon, Conference Convener; and Donnalyn Johns, Student Body President, University of Hawaii at Hilo.
