RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION RELATING TO HERBICIDE FREE PARKS
WHEREAS, our island's park facilities are centers of activity for children and adults alike; and
WHEREAS, there are significant safety concerns regarding exposure to the herbicides commonly
used for vegetation management in our pazks; and
WHEREAS, reducing our children's exposure to herbicides serves to protect their health and
safety in the areas where they recreate; and
WHEREAS, maintaining our pazks without the use of herbicides provides other benefits, such as
the reduction of erosion and the creation of more aesthetically appealing landscapes; and
WHEREAS, the successful maintenance of five Hilo parks, namely Cazlsmith, Kealoha, Leleiwi,
Onekahakaha, and Richazdson's, without herbicides proves the feasibility of establishing herbicide free
parks.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCII. OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests the Director of Pazks and Recreation to nominate one pazk in each council
district to be maintained without the use of herbicides in order to further demonstrate the viability and
potential of maintaining our parks without the use of these herbicides.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Director of Parks and Recreation submit a list of those
parks nominated as "herbicide free" to the Council within 90 days of the passage of this resolution.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this
Resolution to the Mayor, Stephen Yamashiro; the Managing Director, William Davis; and the Director
of Pazks and Recreation, George Yoshida.
