RESOLUTION N0. 3~3 96
WHEREAS, the Panaewa Zoo, opened in September 1977, is situated on 12 acres in the
Panaewa Forest Reserve and houses approximately 150 animals, representing neazly 50 species;
and
WHEREAS, the Panaewa Zoo is the only rainforest zoo in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd H. Yoshina, a loyal and dedicated employee, has been the Panaewa
Recreation Complex Manager since January 1979; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Yoshina has stressed the objectives of the American Association of
Zoological Pazks and Aquariums: education, reseazch, wnservation and reseazch; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Yoshina is very knowledgeable in his field, and under his guidance
with the assistance of the "Friends of the Zoo," the Panaewa Zoo has been an inspiration and
educational focal point for youngsters; and
WHEREAS, although stricken with limited funding to merely keep the zoo operational,
Mr. Yoshina has expanded the zoo's intrigue to include rainforest flora and fauna; and
WHEREAS, under Mr. Yoshina's guidance, while working with tight budget restraints,
the Panaewa Zoo staff and docents have created an educational environment suitable for
reseazch, while doubling as a recreational facility for the community by creating a botanical
gazden which features native and introduced species of plants azound the zoo compound; and
WHEREAS, under Mr. Yoshina's guidance, the Panaewa Zoo has become a quiet respite
for families by providing serene picnic azeas and an educational showcase for the public.
NOW THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED THAT the Council acknowledges the
excellent work done by Lloyd H. Yoshina in his seventeen years of service as the Panaewa
Recreation Complex Manager and extends its heartfelt appreciation to him.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Council on behalf of the County of Hawaii would
like to wish him the very best of luck in his retirement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT copies of this resolution be sent to George Yoshida,
Director of Pazks and Recreation, and to Mr. Lloyd H. Yoshina.
