RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE THE FINANCE DIRECTOR TO ISSUE LICENSES
OR PERMITS FOR COUNTY PROPERTIES ACQUIRED FROM HAMAKUA SUGAR
COMPANY. ~
WHEREAS, The County of Hawaii acquired properties from
Hamakua Sugar Company as a result of a tag rollback settlement in
1994, which are identified in Exhibit "A"; and
WHEREAS, these former cane lands have now been idle for two
years or more; and
WHEREAS, due to the vegetation growth and dry weather, it
has created a fire hazard which is of concern to the fire
department and civil defense agency; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii still has long-term plans for
their properties; however it will not be able to utilize the
properties in the near future; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has received inquiries about
the use of these properties on a short-term basis; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-119, Hawaii County Code, the
County Council may authorize the finance director through
negotiations to issue licenses or permits for County property on
a month-to-month basis for up to one year; and
WHEREAS, short-term leases by the County of Hawaii would
serve not only to keep vegetation down to prevent fire hazards,
but also provide the County of Hawaii with some source of revenue
from these properties, while keeping them available for long-term
use.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED HY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the director pf finance is hereby authorized to
issue licenses or permits pursuant to Section 2-119, Hawaii
County Code.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
sent to the Mayor, Finance Director, Fire Chief and Civil Defense
Administrator.
