HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 394 Draft 01 1994-1996COUNTY OF HAWAII "STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 3 9 ~ 5 6 A RESOLUTION FOR FUNDING TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST TO ERECT A STATUE OF HING KAMEHAMEHA IN HILO. WHEREAS, Kamehameha the Great, was the first Hawaiian ruler to unify the Hawaiian Islands under one monazchy; and WHEREAS, Hilo was the first capital of King Kamehameha with East Hawaii playing a significant role in the King's life through the law of the splintered paddle, the Naha Stone and Wailoa Pond; and WHEREAS, the Princeville Resort on Kauai commissioned a firm in Italy to produce a replica of the King Kamehameha statue that stands across the Iolani Palace in Honolulu at a cost of $250,000; and WHEREAS, Princeville Resort has gifted this 14 foot, 5 ton statue, made out of bronze and 14K gold, to the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association-Mamalahoe-East Hawaii Region, who have created a special subcommittee, the Kamehameha Statue Committee, to obtain, transport, store, erect, and dedicate the statue of King Kamehameha in Hilo; and WHEREAS, the Kamehameha Statue Committee is seeking public and private funds to help defray the cost of erecting the statue at the end of Bishop Street, located directly off Kamehameha Avenue in Wailoa State Park; and WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii finds it in the public interest to erect this statue as a focal point for community activity, especially to stimulate Hawaiian art and culture and as an attraction for the many visitors to East Hawaii. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCII. OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that $15,000 from Council District IV discretionary funds be and is hereby transferred/appropriated out and from Pazks and Recreation Parks R&M Improvements Account No. 010-505-5505.51-115; credited to Reseazch & Development Tourism Miscellaneous Contract Services Account No. 010-161-5161.06-115; and paid to the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association-Mamalahoe-East Hawaii Region to help defray the cost to erect the statue of King Kamehameha in Hilo. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to Mr. George Yoshida, Director of the Department of Pazks and Recreation; Ms. Diane Quitiquit, Director of the Department of Reseazch and Development; Mr. Harry Takahashi, Director of the Department of Finance; and Mr. Terry Plunkett, Chairman of the Kamehameha Statue Committee.
