Hawai'i 96743 0 (J ~ L TO: J Yoshimoto, Chair = and Members of the Hawaii County Council r FROM:~Yete Hoffmann, Council Member DATE: June 24, 2009 - - w SUBJECT: Strawberry Guava Field Trip I would like to place on the July 71h Council Committee agenda a visit to the Waiakea Forest Reserve, a State of Hawaii land managed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife. This visit will offer an insight on what the native Hawaiian forest looks like with and without the strawberry guava trees. The visit will start at the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, on the north side of Stainback Highway, approximately 11.9 miles above the entrance to Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo, at the junction of an unpaved road known as "R" Road (a small "R" sign is posted on the north side of Stainback Road at this location). The visit will then continue down Stainback Highway to "C" Road, which is 3.7 miles above the zoo junction and still within the Waiakea Forest Reserve. Please see the attached map for more directions. Both visited areas are open to the public and accessible with passenger vehicles, but everyone will need to walk along a potentially wet forest trail for about 5 minutes at each site. Hiking shoes and rain gear are recommended. To have the best, well-rounded experience in this forest would require 2 hours and 30 minutes. However, an abbreviated trip can be done in 1 hour 30 minutes, but will not provide the full experience of the two sites. Please place on the appropriate committee agenda. Thank you. op PH/kf Comm.
