RESOLUTION N0. 12 93
WHEREAS, recent announcements by C. Brewer and Company and
Hamakua Sugar Company of the phasing out and closing of their
respective sugar operations will affect the jobs of more than 1,000
employees; and
WHEREAS, said closures will have a domino effect upon other
supply and service industries thereby adding to the estimated
numbers of job losses; and
WHEP.EAS, the demise of the sugar industry mandates a proactive
reassessment of the Big Island's economic base in identifying
alternatives and pursuits which may mitigate the impacts of this
major loss; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii finds that the
Keahole Airport and the resorts along the Kona-Kohala Coast may be a
big part of the resolution of providing for the displaced sugar
workers; and
WHEREAS, the Council further finds that the expansion of the
Keahole Airport to accommodate fully loaded wide bodied aircrafts
will improve the opportunities of the Kona-Kohala resort
destinations to attract direct flights from both domestic and
foreign carriers; and
WHEREAS, the Council further finds that allowing direct flights
to Keahole Airport will be in the best interest of the State of
Hawaii as it will provide much needed relief to the overburdened
Honolulu International Airport but more important it will result in
more convenience and comfort to the distant traveler.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports the effort to designate Keahole Airport as
an international facility with full immigrations and customs
clearance services.
RE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel K.
Inouye, United States Senator, the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, United
States Senator; the Honorable Patsy T. Mink, United States
Congresswoman; the Honorable Neil Abercrombie, United States
Congressman; the Honorable John Waihee, Governor of the State of
Hawaii; the Honorable James Aki, President of th State Senate; the
Honorable Joseph Souki, Speaker of the State House of
Representatives; the Honorable Stephen K. Yamashiro, Mayor of the
County of Hawaii; P4r. Rex Johnson, Director of State Transportation
and N!s. Diane Quitiquit, Director of County Research and Development.
