HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 026 Draft 01 1992-1994COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 26 93 REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII TO EXPLORE AND UNDERTAKE ALL FEASIBLE ACTIONS TO REOPEN A MOLOKAI MULE RIDE OPERATION TO KALAUPAPA, MOLOKAI. WHEREAS, Kalaupapa, located on Molokai's north coast, is an isolated and beautiful peninsula separated from the rest of the island by a 1,600 foot cliff; and WHEREAS, Kaluapapa is a National Historical Park identified with the Belgian missionary priest, Father Damien De Veuster, who ministered to Hansen's disease patients there in the late 1800's; and WHEREAS, the Molokai Mule Ride, which hauled more than 80,000 visitors down the 2.5 mile trail from Kalae to Kalaupapa, was one of the island's most popular visitor attractions; and WHEREAS, the operator of the Molokai Mule Ride for the past ten years announced its closure of business on January 12, 1993, primarily because of rising operation costs and unexpected, major increases in liability insurance premiums; and WHEREAS, thirteen Molokai residents have lost their jobs because of the closure; and WHEREAS, efforts should be made to reopen a mule ride operation in the interest of the Molokai economy. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Hawaii that the Governor and Legislature of the State of Hawaii are requested to explore and undertake all feasible actions to reopen a Molokai mule ride operation to Kalaupapa, Molokai; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk is directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to the Governor of the State of Hawaii, President of the Hawaii State Senate, Speaker of the Hawaii State House of Representatives, and Chair of the Maui County Council.
