HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 027 Draft 01 1992-1994COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 27 9~ WHEREAS, Hawaii's papaya industry operates under a Federal Darketing Order which is administered by the Papaya Administrative Committee; and WHEREAS, once every six years, papaya growers are required to vote as to whether or not they want to continue the Federal Marketing Order; and WHEREAS, in March of 1993 the United States Department of Agriculture will be conducting the continuation referendum among all papaya growers in the State of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the papaya industry is a significant contributor to the economy of the State of Hawaii providing income and employment opportunities; and WHEREAS, the total wholesale value of papaya production amounted to nearly $33.0 million during 1992; and WHEREAS, the Federal Marketing Order provides a basis for the collection of assessments to engage in needed research and development project and advertising and promotion programs; and WHEREAS, as a result of the Marketing Order only the best quality of Hawaii grown papayas are marketed; and WHEREAS, large volumes of papaya are annually shipped to the Continental United States, Canada, Japan and Europe; and WHEREAS, the Papaya Industry has set an example to other commodity groups in the State of Hawaii by having the State's first and only Federal Marketing Order; and WHEREAS the continuation of the Federal Marketing Order is in the best interest of papaya growers, papaya handlers and the general public. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that papaya growers throughout the State of Hawaii be encouraged to vote yes in the continuation referendum. BE ZT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Papaya Administrative Committee be requested to circulate this Resolution to every papaya grower in the State of Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a copy of this resolution to the Papaya Administrative Committee. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 10th day of March 1993.
