HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 039 Draft 01 1992-1994COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 39 93 WH.F.REAS, child abuse and neglect affects children of all ethnic backgrounds, social and economic groups; and WHEREAS, 278 of all children in East Hawaii County are at risk of being abused or neglected; and WHEREAS, there were 440 confirmed cases of child abuse in Hawaii County in 1991; and WHEREAS, the East Hawaii YWCA Mother Infant Support Team (MIST) offers much needed support and assistance to child abuse and neglect victims and their families in East Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the MIST program has assisted more than 133 individuals in East Hawaii in the past year, with an over 9S8 success rate in discontinuing the abusive and neglectful treatment of children; and WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii has been advised that the Department of Human Services plans to reduce its funding for the MIST program by 408 for the coming year; and WHEREAS, such a reduction in funding will diminish PtIST's ability to continue treatment to child abuse and neglect victims and their families, possibly resulting in children's deaths. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Hawaii that it urges Governor Waihee to reinstate full funding to the Department of Human Services' East Hawaii Mother Infant Support Team. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable John Waihee, Governor of the State of Hawaii, to all Legislators on the Human Services, Ways and Means and Finance Committees, and Mrs. Winona Rubin, Director, Department of Human Services.
