COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION N0. `30 93
WHEREAS, the final close down of Hamakua Sugar has fallen
upon us, casting a dark shadow over the future of the former
employees and their families; and
WHEREAS, as the adverse effects disseminate throughout the
communities, the Hamakua residents, who are suffering the greatest
impact, are forced to make sacrifices; and
WHEREAS, due to the anticipated financial difficulties that
are being eaperienced, the students of Honokaa High School took it
upon themselves to cancel arrangements made at the Hyatt Regency
Waikoloa for their Junior/Senior Prom; and
WHEREAS, upon hearing of the cancellation, Mr. Thos Rohr of
Waikoloa Land Company and Mr. Pat Cowell of the Hyatt Regency
Waikoloa offered to sponsor the Honokaa High Junior/Senior Prom,
enabling the students to have this "once in a lifetime"
traditional high school memory at the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rohr and Mr. Cowell also upgraded the music for
the evening to a live band instead of record playing, creating a
night that will be cherished by all those in attendance; and
WHEREAS, this kind gesture will be instilled in the minds of
Hamakua residents for years to come, and whose story will be told
to generation after generation when remembering the days of the
legendary Hamakua Sugar.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the County Council hereby congratulates and
recognizes Mr. Thos Rohr and Mr. Pat Cowell for their generosity,
and unselfishness in giving this special gift to the Juniors and
Seniors of Honokaa High School and shedding some light on the
darkness that has fallen upon the residents of Hamakua.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
transmitted to the Honorable Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro and true
copies of this resolution be transmitted to Mr. Thos Rohr of
Waikoloa Land Company and Mr. Pat Cowell of the Hyatt Regency
Waikoloa,
