RESOLUTION N0._=93
REQUESTING THE HAWAII COUNTY SALARY COMMISSION TO RECONSIDER
THE PAY INCREASES FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS:.
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Charter was amended by the voters
in 1990 creating the salary commission which requires the salary of
all county elected officials be established by a salary commission;
and
WHEREAS, the charter charges the commission with the
responsibility of reviewing and compensating elected officials "so
that their salaries have a reasonable relationship to the salaries
of civil service employees, given due consideration for the duties
and responsibilities of the officials"; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Salary Commission met in session on
April 8, 1993, and voted an increase for Hawaii County elected
officials; and
WHEREAS, present economic conditions in the County and State
of Hawaii are of major concern to our community; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of our fellow citizens have recently become
unemployed and there exists impending unemployment for hundreds of
other citizens; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE I^1 RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests the Hawaii County Salary Commission to
reconsider the salary increases voted at its April 8, 1993, meeting
and reject the same.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in the future any increase
approved by the Salary Commission should be effective beginning with
the new term of the elected official's position.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable
Stephen K. Yamashiro, Mayor, County of Hawaii; Honorable Jay Kimura,
Prosecuting Attorney, County of Hawaii, and Mr. Richard West, Salary
Commission Chairman.
