RESOLUTION N0. 58 S3
WHEREAS, good mental health is necessary to experience ecstasy
and overcome agony in aging, and aging is inevitable; and
WHEREAS, 15 to 25 percent of the elderly in the United States
suffer from significant symptoms of mental illness; and
WHEREAS, over the last decade in Hawaii, the number of elderly
over 60 years of age has increased 52 percent as compared to 15
percent increase in the general population; and
WHEREAS, many of the elderly patients do not receive necessary
treatment for mental illness due to inadequate insurance coverage
for psychiatric treatment and only 50 percent payment by Medicare
for outpatient psychiatric treatment; and
WHEREAS, Honolulu County Medical Society and Hawaii
Psychiatric Medical Association have worked to improve mental
health of the elderly in the State of Hawaii and wish to recognize
the social asset represented by our aged.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it acknowledges the Honorable Mayor Stephen
Yamashiro's proclamation of May as "Mental Health Month" and
encourages everyone in our community to work toward making senior
years "golden years" and to promote awareness of the legacy
offered to our society by our elders.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
transmitted to the Honorable Mayor Stephen Yamashiro, Leonard
Howard, MD, Honolulu County Medical Society and Krishna Kumar, MD,
Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association.
