RESOLUTION NO. 73 93 ~`
WHEREAS, agriculture has always played a dominant role in the
development of the Hawaiian Islands and, together with tourism,
contributes significantly to the backbone of the Big Island's economy;
and
WHEREAS, we need to promote agricultural diversification as a means
of maintaining a strong agricultural presence on the Island of Hawaii;
and
WHEREAS, the abundance of available agricultural land and the
establishment of processing facilities on the island have enabled
Hawaii's Macadamia Nut Industry to expand significantly over the past
40 years to become the world's leading producer of Macadamia Nuts; and
WHEREAS, successes enjoyed by the Hawaii Macadamia Nut Industry
are, in large part, attributed to the support and assistance the
industry has received from the State, the County and the University of
Hawaii for promotional and research programs; and
WHEREAS, because of anticipated shortfalls in revenues for the
State during the current fiscal period, funding approved by the
Governor's Agricultural Coordinating Committee last year for on-going
research on Macadamia Quick Decline (MQD) and other related disease and
pest control projects has not been released; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to the future viability of the Hawaii
Macadamia Nut Industry that such on-going research projects be
continued because of the devastating effects of MQD on mature nut
bearing trees and pest damages to Macadamia Nuts.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests the Governor to expedite the release of the
$65,000 approved by the GACC for on-going research in prevention and
control of the Macadamia Quick Decline disease and other pest control
projects.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be transmitted to
Governor John Waihee and true copies be transmitted to Gary Doi, Acting
Director, Governors Agricultural Coordinating Committee, Mark K.
Crawford Director, Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association.
