COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION NO.. 9i 9~

caused by its name being the same as the name of our state; and

calling us "The Big Island" are meaningless and confusing; and
WHEREAS, no geographical map or atlas identifies our island
as "The Big Island"; and
WHEREAS, there are many "IIig Islands" in the world but only
one Hawaii Island; and
WHEREAS, "Big Island" does nothing to describe the rich
historical and cultural treasures our island holds; and
WHEREAS, tourism is our largest industry and needs help; and
WHEREAS, tY~e latest Pacific Asian Travel Association meeting
held in Honolulu did not feature any of the attractions of the
"Big Island"; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent on our county government to take a
more active lead in encouraging the promotion of our island; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary for us to establish an identity
that tells where we are and what we are.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUN'PY
OF HAWAII, that we request the Department of Business, Economic
Development and Tourism and the Hawaii Visitors Bureau to
officially recognize that we are Hawaii Island, and to gear
future promotions to this proper identity; and
