RESOLUTION N0. 98 93

NG SOURCE SEPARATION OF SOLID WASTE MATERIAL
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii must be responsible regarding
waste management, particularly in light of the federal Resource
Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (42 United States Code
Section 6901 et seq.) and State goals and mandates as enunciated
in Act 324, the Hawaii Integrated Solid Waste Management Act
(Chapter 342G Hawaii Revised Statutes); and
WHEREAS, Chapter 342G of the Hawaii Revised Statutes directs
the County of Hawaii to divert twenty-five percent of its waste
stream by 1995 and fifty percent by the year 2000 to meet state
goals; and
WHEREAS, recycling is one of the principal means to accomplish
these goals; and
WHEREAS, it is good business to support local private
enterprises which engage in diverting waste from the landfill; and
WHEREAS, the local citizenry supports the concept and
principles behind recycling and diversion in general and
understands the need to cooperate in facilitating a responsible
approach to solid waste management such as source separation; and
WHEREAS, the county can aid local small business and the
development of jobs involved in the materials recovery industry by
assuring a steady supply of clean and separated materials.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that the Hawaii f'ounty Council, in approving the Solid
Waste Management Plan ~:or the county, underscore Source Separation
as one of the highest priorities in executing the plan.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro;
Senator Andrew Levin; Senator Richard Matsuura; Senator Malama
Solomon; Representative Jerry Chang; Representative Robert Herkes;
Representative Virginia Isbell; Representative Harvey Tajiri;
Representative Dwight Takamine; Representative Larry Tanimoto;
Planning Director Virginia Goldstein; and Chief Engineer Donna
Kiyosaki.
