COUNTY OF HAWAII `STATE OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION N0. -132 93
WHEREAS, the Councilmembers of the County Council of Hawaii
recently had an opportunity to question the resource team members
who did the draft Spaceport Environmental Impact Statement; and
WHEREAS, The consultants admitted further research to prepare a
Final E.I.S. on the Spaceport would cost more money; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic
Development and Tourism, through the auspices of the Office of Space
Industry, has spent millions of taxpayer dollars in a seemingly
fruitless search for commercial sponsors of an obsolete technology
and a taxpayer's economic black hole; and
WHEREAS, the draft Environmental Impact Statement issued by the
State of Hawaii reveals enormous risks to human life on the Island
of Hawaii, both from the transportation of chemicals and fuels and
from the rocket launches; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council supports "home rule" and the
idea of local communities making informed decisions about the issues
that affect them directly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that we do not support the continued funding of this project
by state, countp~ or federal monies and request that all such
allocations be ceased immediately.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to The Honorable John D. Waihee,
Governor, State of Hawaii; The Honorable Andrew Levin, State
Senator; The Honorable Robert Herkes, State Representative; The
Honorable Stephen Yamashiro, Mayor, County of Hawaii; Mufi
Hannemann, Director, Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic
Development and Tourism; Takeshi Yoshihara, Deputy Director, Hawaii
State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; The
Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senator; The Honorable
Daniel Akaka, U.S. Senator, The Honorable Patsy Mink, U.S.
Representative; The Honorable Neil Abercrombie, U.S. Representative;
and all other legislators of the State of Hawaii.
