HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 140 Draft 01 1992-1994COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION N0. 240 93 WHEREAS, the residents of South Kona suffer regular, severe and unreasonable traffic congestion and commuting delays along Mamalahoa Highway because of school-generated traffic movements at the Konawaena Intermediate and High School access road intersection; and WHEREAS, Mamalahoa Highway is the only thoroughfare spanning this part of South Kona and thus is the only route available to the public for travel through this region; and WHEREAS, the extreme congestion is a serious hardship for students, parents, and general public needing to commute through this intersection, and also prevents the swift and safe movement of police, fire and emergency rescue vehicles throughout the populated centers of South Kona; and WHEREAS, the Department of Education has requested and the Legislature has approved appropriations for the construction of a new Konawaena Elementary School in the vicinity of this congested intersection, together with over two million dollars for intersection improvements to Mamalahoa Highway to correct the existing problem and accommodate the traffic flow impacts of the new elementary school; and WHEREAS, this portion of Mamalahoa Highway is a County road; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that the Council requests Governor John D. Waihee, III to release the funds designated for the needed intersection improvements. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to Governor Waihee, Senator Andy Levin, Representative Virginia Isbell, Charles Toguchi, Superintendent of Schools and Dr. Robert Fox, Boa rd of Education member.
