RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HAWAIIAN TELEPHONE INSTALLATION OF FIBER
OPTIC CABLES TO THE COUNTY OF HAWAII.
WHEREAS, the Big Island of Hawaii has a favorable environment
for developing high tech industries; and
WHEREAS, the Big Island of Hawaii is in need of a more
reliable communication system for its citizens and our local
schools; and
WHEREAS, the astronomy industry requires a minimum number of
optic lines to obtain information and to control their telescope;
and
WHEREAS, fiber optic cables will provide more communication
lines for long distance calls to neighbor island and the rest of
the world; and
WHEREAS, fiber optic cable is the most economical
telecommunication system available; and
WHEREAS, the capacity of the fiber optic cables will allow the
island of Hawaii to route instant information anywhere in the
world, thereby allowing people with scientific background to
reside on the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, fiber optic cables with their expanded channel
frequency will facilitate the development of a medical industry,
encourage data processing business, a high tech telecommunication
industry and allow the Big Island of Hawaii to meet the challenges
of the 21st Century.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports GTE Hawaiian Telephone Company, in its
efforts to install fiber optic cables of not less than 600
megabits per second or the minimum required megabit bandwidths to
encourage the diversified industries to locate on the Big Island
of Hawaii.
HE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council requests that GTE
Hawaiian Telephone Company install the fiber optic cables from
Hamakua to Hilo on its initial inception.
