RESOLUTION N0. 254 94
RESOLUTION REQUESTING GTE HAWAIIAN TEL TO MAINTAIN ITS REGULAR
WORK FORCE.
WHEREAS, GTE Hawaiian Tel has implemented a reduction in its
work force of regular full-time employees on the island of Hawaii;
and
WHEREAS, in the past, GTE Hawaiian Tel has maintained
employment during periods of decreased work load by redistributing
its affected employees to positions within the company through a
process called "loan-outs," returning employees to their prior
jobs when the work load increases again; and
WHEREAS, at this time, GTE Hawaiian Tel has enough vacancies
to keep all the affected employees working through "loan-outs"; and
WHEREAS, in the neat few months, GTE Hawaiian Tel will be
investing about $68 million in the area of cable television,
creating positions which could accommodate, with re-training, the
employees being laid off.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests GTE Hawaiian Tel to consider the needs of
its regular full-time employees and attempt to maintain their
employment through "loan-outs" or by retraining them for other
jobs within the company.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of this
Resolution be transmitted to Kent B. Foster, President, GTE
Telephone Operations; Warren H. Haruki, President, GTE Hawaiian
Tel; George M. Waialeale, Business Manager - Financial Secretary,
IBEW Local Union 1357; the Honorable John D. Waihee III, Governor,
State of Hawaii; Yukio Naito, Chairman, Public Utilities
Commission; Mr. Dennis Yamada, Member, Public Utilities
Commission; Mr. John Spierling, Member, Public Utilities
Commission; U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye; Senator Daniel K.
Akaka; Representative Neil Abercrombie; Representative Patsy T.
Mink; Senator Malama Solomon; Senator Richard M. Matsuura; Senator
Andrew Levin; Representative Dwight Y. Takamine; Representative
Jerry L. Chang; Representative Harvey S. Tajiri; Representative
Robert N. Herkes; Representative Virginia Isbell; and
Representative Larry S. Tanimoto.
