RESOLUTION No. 14 8
WHEREAS, on January 16, 1989, the State of Hawaii, together with
most of the sovereign states of our great union, will commemorate
the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as an official State
holiday; and
WHEREAS, in observing this holiday, Hawaii joins in recognizing
the dedication of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the causes of
peace, social justice, economic well-being and inter-racial and
inter-ethnic harmony among all people; and
WHEREAS, because of Dr. King's efforts and countless others who
have dedicated their lives to human rights, civil liberties, and
economic justice, we have been able to reaffirm the American ideals
of freedom, justice and opportunity for all; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii is happy to join in
the observation of the birthdate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and
honor this great American, his work, and the work of others like him.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that we pay great tribute and honor to the memory of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and call upon the people of Hawaii
County to remember his outstanding contribution to mankind in the
name of human rights and civil liberties.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable John Waihee,
Governor of the State of Hawaii; Mrs. Loretta Scott King; the
Honorable Bernard K. Akana, Mayor of the County of Hawaii;
Dr. Donnis Thompson, Chairperson of the Martin Luther King Jr.
Holiday Advisory Committee; and to Mr. Earnest Morgan, Coordinator
of the Hawaii County Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance.

Re: Resolution 14 Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Pursuant to Section 1 (d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of
the Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is
submitted in regards to Resolution No. 14, honoring Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., waiviny said referral from the Committee on
Human Services and Recreation in order that appropriate action can
be taken by the Council.
In reviewing the contents of the referral, it is deemed advisable
that such waiver be granted for the timely consideration of this
resolution.
