STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No, 2I 89 WHEREAS, the Hawaii Chinese community will commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese in the Hawaiian Islands; and WHEREAS, the early Chinese settlers in search of a better life and fortune were able to develop their talents on the Big Island that improved their economic, educational and social status; and WHEREAS, the Chinese pioneered in operating sugar mills and plantations, contributing to the beginning of the sugar industry on the Big Island; and WHEREAS, the early Chinese farmers cultivated and marketed other important food staples such as rice and poi from the Hamakua and Kohala communities and coffee from the Kona area; and WHEREAS, the Chinese pursued other economic opportunities which resulted in small neighborhood groceries, fish and meat markets, cafes and general merchandise stores in nearly every town; and WHEREAS, for two centuries, the Chinese community on the Big Island has also greatly contributed to society by their beliefs and values of hard work, good education, family, benevolence, diligence, thrift, and public service; and WHEREAS, today, the men and women of Chinese ancestry continue to excel well in the fields of business, law, medicine, banking, government services, education, and trade. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it honors and recognizes the Chinese community of the past and the present and for their many years of outstanding contributions to the people of the Big Island. Your Committee finds that the Chinese community on the Big Island has contributed greatly to society by adhering to their values of hard work, education, family, benevolence, diligence, thrift and public service. Your Committee further finds that it is appropriate to recognize and honor the Chinese of the Big Island on the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the Chinese in the Hawaiian Islands. Your Committee concurred with the Chairwoman's recommendation to approve Resolution No. 21-89.
