RESOLUTION No.
26 89
WHEREAS, this year, diseases of the heart and blood vessels
(cardiovascular diseases) will kill almost one million Americans,
which equals the number of deaths from all other causes combined; and
WHEREAS, such diseases are the number one killers in Hawaii,
claiming the lives of more than 8000 people during 1988; and
WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease will cost our country over $80
billion for medications, physicians and nursing services, and
hopsital and nursing home services as well; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association is the only national
voluntary health agency whose sole mission is to reduce early death
and disability from cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and
related disorders; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association, in its goal to extend
its services to more of Hawaii's citizens, has recently opened an
additional division on the Big Island, providing the residents of
East Hawaii and now, West Hawaii with the services of their own
American Heart Association divisions; and
WHEREAS, the American Heart Association is fighting for your life
by funding a nationwide research program, as well as improving health
care in the community through professional and public education and
community service programs such as Stroke Support Group, CPR
instruction, free blood pressure screening, health awareness and
wellness programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests and urges all citizens to
support the lifesavings mission carried out by hundreds of
Hawaii's community volunteers during AMERICAN HEART MONTH - as
the month of February has been proclaimed - as they go about
the urgent task of raising the necessary funds to allow the
American Heart Association to continue its fight against
cardiovascular disease and stroke.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to the American Heart
Association members Pudding Lassiter, President, Board of
Director, East Hawaii Division; Walter Kimura, President, Board
of Director, West Hawaii Division; Barbara R. Kozuma, Director,
East Hawaii Division; Eleanor Ruddle, Director of West Hawaii
Division.
