RESOLUTION No.
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch
Hilo in honor of Hawaii's beloved
La'amea Kalakaua, for the purpose
he loved so well; and

Festival is held annually in
Royal Merrie Monarch, King David
of perpetuating the festivities
WHEREAS, the 26th annual Merrie Monarch Festival will be
held March 26 through April 1, 1989 featuring the theme "KALAKAUA:
HAWAII'S LAST RULING KING", and will begin with a ho'olaulea at
Coconut Island on Kuhio Day, March 26th; and
WHEREAS, the Merrie Monarch Festival is the largest, most
prestigious, and world famous hula competition in the State of
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the hula competition features the best of hula
training, dedication and creative vision and is recognized as the
gathering of pre-eminent hula masters and their tradition as
expressed in the songs, chants, and hula of their respective
halau; and
WHEREAS, the overwhelming success of this annual event over
the last twenty-five years has made the Island of Hawaii the Hula
Capital of the World and has reached out to thousands of
television viewers each year; and
FIHEREAS, the success of this Merrie Monarch Festival is a
tribute to those dedicated Big Islanders who contribute countless
hours of their time to plan, develop and carry out this event;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL
that it takes great pleasure in commending Dorothy "Dot" Thompson
and the members of the Merrie Monarch Festival Committee for their
part in helping to preserve and perpetuate our unique and
beautiful Hawaiian heritage.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Earl Iopakealiihoomanawanui
Serrao, Sr. serving as King and Rosemary Malulani Hokoana serving
as Queen of the Royal Court of the Merrie Monarch Festival be
recognized and commended for their part in promoting this event.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this Resolution
be presented to Ms. Dorothy "Dot" Thompson, Chairman of the Merrie
Monarch Festival Committee, and to Earl I. Serrao, Sr. King of the
Royal Court and Rosemary M. Hokoana Queen of the Royal Court.

Re: Resolution No. 31
Pursuant to Section 1(d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the
Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is submitted
in regards to Resolution No. 31, relating to Merrie Monarch
Festival commending Dorothy Thompson and recognizing Earl Serrao Sr.
and Rosemary Hokoana as King and Queen of the Royal Court,
waiving said referral from the Committee on Human Services and
Recreation in order that appropriate action can be taken by the
Council.
In reviewing the contents f the referral, it is deemed advisable
that such waiver be granted. 7
