HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 042 Draft 01 1988-1992OFFICE INFORMATION ONLY Meeting: April 19, 1989 Action: Approve and adopt EDC Report No. 3 Re: Res. 42-89 COUNTY OF HA1A(q~ , :a;_,.:STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. 42 88 WHEREAS, economic diversification and stabilization and the expansion of employment opportunities have been goals consistently sought for the County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, Hawaii's geographical location in the Pacific Basin provides Hawaii with the potential of becoming a center for international trade; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii, with its large undeveloped land mass, alternative energy potential, expanding high technology industry and growing visitor industry, provides the diversification necessary to participate and compete in international trade; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is also blessed with two underutilized port facilities, the Hilo Wharf and the Hilo International Airport-General Lyman Field, which are capable of handling the necessary shipment of unfinished and finished goods; and WHEREAS, "Foreign Trade Zones" have proven to be instrumental in attracting foreign interests in such activities as manufacturing, exporting, importing and transshipping; and WHEREAS, the establishment of a "Foreign Trade Zone" utilizing the Hilo wharf and Hilo International Airport-General Lyman Field facilities would provide the means by which the County of Hawaii could enter into the competition in attracting international trade; and WHEREAS, the unlimited potential presented by Hawaii's entrance into international trade is in consonance with the long sought goals and objectives for economic diversification and stabilization and the creation of more employment opportunities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it endorses a policy of establishing a "Foreign Trade Zone" in the County of Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable John Waihee, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the Honorable Richard Wong, President of the Senate, the Honorable Daniel Kihano, Speaker of the House; the Big Island State Legislators and the Honorable Bernard K. Akana, Mayor of the County of Hawaii. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 19th day of Anril , 1989.
