Home My WebLink AboutRES 048 Draft 01 1988-1992.- OFFICE INFORMATION ONLY April 19, 1989 IYICEUAg: Approve and adopt EDC Report No. 4 Action: Res. 48-89 Re: r COUNTY OF HAVIfA.~,, ESTATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No 48 89 WHEREAS, for several years Hawaii's anthurium industry has suffered from a bacterial blight which if allowed to continue may threaten the industry's very existence; and WHEREAS, the magnitude of this problem has reduced actual production front 2.25 million dozen flowers in 1986 to 1.91 million dozen flowers in 1987 which equates to an actual loss in revenue to Hawaii growers of approximately $1,540,000 and, according to the industry, an indirect loss approaching $8,500,000; and WHEREAS, at the request of Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye, the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Emergency Committee has declared this blight problem a disaster on the local level; and WHEREAS, the industry is urging the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture to make a similar declaration which could trigger federal assistance to combat this situation which threatens the economic stability of one of Hawaii's major agricultural industries; and WHEREAS, according to a study by Dr. Sabry Shehata, Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Hawaii Hilo's College of Agriculture, the 20 percent a year decline in production being experienced would eliminate a majority of the anthurium growers in the State within five to ten years. 170W, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVEll BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports the Hawaii Anthurium Industry Association in their effort to have Governor John Waihee declare this blight a Hawaii disaster so that the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture may make the same declaration and allow Hawaii's congressional delegation to seek federal assistance from the U. S. Department of Agriculture. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be instructed to send copies of this resolution to the Honorable John Waihee, Governor of the State of Hawaii; the honorable Daniel K. Inouye, United States Senator; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, United States Senator; the Honorable Daniel K.
