Re: Res. 78-89 COUNTY OF HAVIF,At~k .: <STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION No. '78 88 WHEREAS, the NMEA Oceania Chapter, representing marine educators from throughout the State of Hawaii, has agreed to host the national organization, the National Marine Educators Association, at a conference to be held at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and various coastal sites around the island of Hawaii during August 5-12, 1990. The conference theme is "Islands in the Sea;" and WHEREAS, the Big Island is well-suited for the upcoming conference. The island of Hawaii is a most unique setting for marine education in that it is the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, and therefore has geological features which exemplify the volcanic formation of islands, such as active volcanoes, black sand beaches, virgin lava fields, a steep offshore bathymetry, and an offshore island, Loihi, in the process of being formed, whereby scientists can conveniently study geological processes in a natural geological oceanographic laboratory; and WHEREAS, it is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and has the tallest mountain peaks and the most diverse of climatic settings distributed about its topography, giving scientists and educators the opportunity to trace the water cycle from ocean to atmosphere to terrestrial habitats and back to the ocean again, thereby increasing man's knowledge about the natural cycles of the earth, and to study the atmospheric conditions and even the stars from the most optimum vantage points on earth; and WHEREAS, it also possesses a diverse underwater environment with habitats from windward to leeward sides which exemplify the coral reef formation typical of such subtropical islands, and, indeed, also provide spectacular pristine underwater settings in this natural biological oceanographic laboratory for both scientific study and recreational pursuits. The many environments that typify island ecology may be found here, in close proximity, unlike anywhere else; and WHEREAS, NMEA 1990 Conference on the island of Hawaii will bring new visitors to the Big Island from around the world, the mainland and the neighbor islands whose specific mission is to learn about the marine world and to share this knowledge with others in their home communities, thereby spreading the knowledge that the Big Island is a unique natural laboratory for the study of marine biological, geological, oceanographic and other scientific disciplines, as well as a pristine, ideal setting for marine recreational activities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it welcomes the opportunity to host the 1990 National Marine Educators Association Conference to be held at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and will assist the Conference to its utmost extent in making it a fruitful and productive conference. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit copies of this resolution to Ms. Barbara Lee and Ms. Anne Coopersmith, Co-Chairpersons of the NMEA '90 Conference Committee; and to the President of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
