RESOLUTION No,
85 89
WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii has experienced the decline of
tropical reef fish over the last few years, particularly in Kona
waters; and
WHEREAS, the depletion of tropical reef fish includes the
paku'iku'i (acanthurus achilles) only found in the Hawaiian
island chain, which has decreased in population by 75~ since as
early as 1976; and
WHEREAS, the lau'ipala or yellow tang (zebrasoma
flavescens), known to be the brightest and strongest of the
species found in tropical island waters, which once roamed in
schools of over 100, are depleted by 85~ as of the 1976 study by
S.A. Kahanamoku, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, the kihikihi or butterfly fish (zanolus canascens)
has also been reduced by 65~ of the population as of 1976 as
documented by S.A. Kahanamoku, Jr., and
WHEREAS, the most famous of all Hawaiian species, the
