RESOLUTION No. ]'9 .~i0
WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii observes the third Monday in
January each year as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; and
WHEREAS, in commemorating this annual holiday, the State of
Hawaii recognizes the leadership and dedication of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. who worked to insure that all people of our great nation
can enjoy their civil liberties with dignity and justice; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii is happy to join in
the commemoration of the birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
and honor this exceptional American for his civil rights work; and
WHEREAS, this year's observance in the County of Hawaii includes
the reading of the official proclamation at the Mooheau Park, a
Hawaii County Band concert, a candlelight memorial walk, the ringing
of church bells, and a performance of "A Dream for the New Year"
which is a tribute to the music, dance, song and the spoken word in
honor of Dr. King.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its tribute in the memory of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr, and calls upon the people of the County of Hawaii
to join in and reflect upon the progress our nation has made as a
result of Dr. King's work.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this resolution to Mrs. Loretta Scott King, to
the Honorable Bernard K. Akana, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and
to Ms. Fay Hovey and Mr. Earnest Morgan, Coordinators of the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observance in Hawaii County.

Pursuant to Section 1(d) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the
Council of the County of Hawaii, this written approval is submitted
in regards to Resolution 129-90, relating to Martin Luther King Day,
waiving said referral from the Committee on Inter-Governmental Re-
lations in order that appropriate action can be taken by the Council.
In reviewing the contents of the referral, it is deemed advisable
that such waiver be granted.
